Although the summer movie season is in full swing right now, there are still some big releases left to go. From Fede Álvarez, Alien: Romulus is releasing next month, and the director has been very vocal about his taking care to live up to the previous films. Alien: Romulus follows a young group of characters as they unknowingly discover the terrors of space in a tall, stalking alien, intent on hunting them down.
Romulus is another installment in a long line of films that has been running since 1979, with Ridley Scott’s horror classic, Alien. Since then, there have been a multitude of sequels, with directors like James Cameron and David Fincher jumping into the mix as well.
During San Diego Comic-Con, director Álvarez was able to sit down with Deadline to talk about the new film in detail. One aspect that Álvarez greatly expressed was that he wanted this film to serve as a reminder of how the franchise began. He stated that as scary as the film had been, it is “what made it grow and made it a massive hit. It was truly something people hadn’t seen before, and it was a pure horror movie.”
One other element of the film that Álvarez spoke about was the relationship between characters and even just their general age. As stated, he never had a main group in mind to target the film to, but he simply wanted the film to be a younger, more inexperienced group, as opposed to the experienced crew of the Nostromo in Alien.
Alien: Romulus bursts onto the big screen on August 16.
