A perfect fit as San Diego Comic-Con continues as indie comedy Slash, a festival favorite centering around erotic fan-fiction from director Clay Liford, has just been acquired by Gravitas Ventures. Gravitas picked up North American distribution rights to the comedy just as Liford and the film’s star Michael Johnston (best known for MTV’s Teen Wolf) held quarters for the “Under the Radar” panel at Comic-Con’s Hall H on Thursday afternoon. Gravitas is planning a theatrical run sometime later this fall – with runs likely at some Alamo Drafthouse theaters.
Slash, which held its world premiere at South By Southwest and recently played Outfest Los Angeles, tells the story of Neil (Johnston), an awkward high-schooler who pens erotic fan-fiction around a popular science-fiction superhero. When his hobby is outed, a horrified Neil finds comfort in his crush Julia (Hannah Marks, The Amazing Spider-Man), a steamy fan-fiction writer in her own right. She then encourages Neil to submit his work for an online forum, which gets him a Comic-Con invitation as well grabs the attention of the site’s moderator (Michael Ian Black, Wet Hot American Summer), whose interests might be more than strictly professional. Missi Pyle (Big Fish) co-stars.
