Warner Bros. and DC have just released the final trailer for the upcoming horror-thriller Clayface, a film set in DCU’s Gotham City that follows the origin of the titular villain.
“The procedure’s causing troubling physical changes,” Naomi Ackie’s character says in the trailer to film star Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), who begins to develop a mutation of the flesh following a plastic surgery like treatment in response to a violent mutilation he suffers. Hagen is seen aboard an airplane where his eyelids begin to fuse shut, what ensues is teased to contain body horror elements and he tries to understand and control the affliction. “This is gonna be hard for you to believe,” Ackie continues. “Matt Hagen can change his face.”
Hagen, the “Clayface”, is seen as his full-body mutations become more grotesque and severe, leaving horror and violence in his vengeful wake. He is even seen to possess the ability to morph into the likeness of other people.
The official synopsis attached to the Clayface trailer is as follows:
Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.
Alongside Harries and Ackie, Clayface stars David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James. The film is directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) from a screenplay by horror tycoon Mike Flanagan (Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini from a story by Flanagan. Clayface, who serves as a villain to caped crusader Batman, is suspected to be set up to oppose the Dark Knight when he joins James Gunn’s budding DCU franchise.
