Focus Features To Distribute ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Adaptation From Auteur Robert Eggers

Focus Features has won a bidding war for the rights to Romeo and Juliet from auteur director Robert Eggers, who is famously known for this extensive period-pieces such as Nosferatu, The Lighthouse, and the upcoming 14th-century set Werwulf. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Focus Features beat out other studios such as A24, Sony, and Warner Bros. for the distribution rights. The Universal Pictures subsidiary previously distributed Nosferatu and the upcoming Werwulf  for Eggers.

It has also been reported that in close faith to the source material, William Shakespeare’s 14th century play, the film’s dialogue will be written in Early Modern English. No other plot or production details have been revealed aside from fact that it will be Egger’s next distributed project after Werwulf, which hits theaters this Christmas. It is rumored the rights deal for the upcoming Romeo and Juliet entered the high seventy millions, with no comment from Focus Features.
