The new movie “Eye in the sky” starring Helen Mirren (The Queen), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Alan Rickman (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Philips) brings to light some of the ethical dilemmas surrounding drone strikes in the ongoing War on Terror.
The trailer shows a group of military and intelligence personnel at pains to decide how to proceed when forced to choose between humanitarianism and realpolitik. Writing for The Guardian, Benjamin Lee praises director Gavin Hood (Ender’s Game) for making thriller that doesn’t rely on “us constantly being told what to think and when to think it”, in contrast to Rendition, a previous movie by him on a similar subject matter while Caryn James (WSJ) calls it a “tick-tock thriller”.
The Obama administration has received a failing grade when it comes to drone strike “oversight and accountability”, as per “the Stimson Center, a DC-based think tank”. Speaking on behalf of the center, Rachel Stohl, the author of the report pointed out that, “The lack of a clear drone policy risks leaving a legacy on drone use that is based on secrecy and a lack of accountability that undermines efforts to support the international rule of law”.
