Jimi: All Is By My Side, a biopic of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix that premiered last year at the Toronto Film Festival, has a trailer to promote its theatrical release later this year. The film stars hip hop artist Andre “3000” Benjamin with Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter in Captain America), Imogen Poots, and Ashley Charles as Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. The film was written and directed by John Ridley, who wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for 12 Years A Slave.
Jimi Hendrix was an American guitarist who began recording in 1964. His band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, achieved mainstream success in the UK in 1967 with their first LP Are You Experienced, which featured the singles Hey Joe and Purple Haze. The album was a hit in the US as well, reaching number 5 on the Billboard 200. In addition to his complex electric guitar work, Hendrix was also known for his stage theatrics. After watching The Who perform their signature ‘destroy all our instruments’ routine at the end of their set, Hendrix took the stage next and finished his performance by setting fire to his guitar.
While All Is By My Side will not feature any of Hendrix’s original songs, the music from the trailer is certainly reminiscent of his signature style. Mxdwn’s Tim Falkenberg was able to get an early look at the film back in March at SXSW. All Is By My Side will reach US theaters on September 26, but will be available in the UK on August 8.
