Fall is on the way, and with it comes several prestigious film festivals which are sure to produce some of the year’s best films. However, several films that were originally slated for this year will likely be pushed to 2027 for a variety of reasons.
Greg Kwedar’s Saturn Return for Netflix, starring Charles Melton, Rachel Brosnahan, and Will Poulter, is now expected to debut at South by Southwest next March. The film is Kwedar’s next film following Sing Sing, and is a Chicago-set romance that follows the lives of three college friends over the years. Edward Berger’s next film for A24 is The Riders, starring Brad Pitt. The film is a psychological thriller based on Tim Winton’s 1994 novel. The film started production this year, so getting a release this year is unlikely. Berger has had Oscar success with Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front, so this will be one to watch for.
Joel Cohen’s next feature, Jack of Spades, finished filming last year and has screened for test audiences. The film stars Josh O’Connor and Frances McDormand. It appears to nearly have a final cut ready, so this one may come sooner rather than later. However, it has yet to find a distributor. Here Comes the Flood, from director Fernando Meirelles, is a heist thriller where a bank guard, a teller and a master thief all get intertwined in a nonlinear story. The film stars Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Danai Gurira and Sean Harris. Netflix’s slate is pretty full for the rest of the year, so this will likely be pushed to 2027.
