Critics Give First Reactions To ‘The End of Oak Street’

The first reactions from critics on The End of Oak Street have been unveiled. The newest film from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell, starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway, has sparked mostly positive reactions from critics. Many of these critics took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to provide their reactions, including the following.

David Ehrlich, chief film critic of Indiewire, had the following to say about the film:

The End of Oak Street absolutely rocks. Hilarious, perfectly paced, Ambliny but mean as hell, Anne Hathaway blasts a T-Rex with a shotgun… it delivers more fun in any 5-minute stretch than the entire Jurassic franchise has in total since the 90s. biggest surprise of the summer.

David Robert Mitchell delivers a personal and original sci-fi survival dinosaur movie with THE END OF OAK STREET that feels like classic Amblin Entertainment. The fantastic production design completely sells the time period, while Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor deliver two strong, capable, performances as parents desperately trying to keep their family together as the world around them falls apart. It has its fair share of silly moments, and I certainly question the moral ethics of its ending, but overall, this was a fun, nostalgic, and well-paced thrill ride that blows every one of the “Jurassic World” movies out of the water for its dinosaur action and grounded, relatable emotion.

This movie is well-made, brisk, a lot of fun, and also has a strain of familial sincerity in common with most of this summer’s blockbusters like THE ODYSSEY, SPIDER-MAN: BND, and TOY STORY 5. A welcome shift away from “Well, THAT just happened” irony-storytelling. See it.

Not every critic was positive on the film. Courtney Howard had the following to say about the film:

David Robert Mitchell’s #EndofOakStreet has very few surprises up its sleeve. Logic doesn’t live here. The Amblin play for nostalgia curdles quickly. With exception of 2 moments, it’s completely derivative of JURASSIC PARK dinosaur-driven tension & spectacle.

Audiences can see The End of Oak Street for themselves when the film releases in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures this Friday, August 14.
