Ethan Hawke (Black Phone) is set to star in a new horror movie by longtime collaborator Scott Derrickson (Sinister). In an interview with Polygon for Hawke’s new movie, The Weight, Hawke confirmed he is working with Derrickson on a new project. When asked if he would star in another horror movie, Hawke said,
I don’t have agendas like that about what kind of movie, really. I like people. Yeah, Scott and I are working on something right now. I think he’s so gifted. I like working with him.
Hawke and Derrickson first collaborated on Sinister. Hawke played a true-crime author discovering a dark connection between the deaths of families. The next collaboration was for the movie The Black Phone. Instead of playing the protagonist in this one, Hawke got to play the main villain, the grabber. He returned as the character in the sequel Black Phone 2. It is not confirmed what the project is, but Derrickson has already spoken in the past about the likelihood of a third movie in the Black Phone series. In another interview with Polygon, Derrickson said,
I understand that’s the business of the studios, trying to create film franchises. And I certainly respect film franchises as a horror fan. But as a filmmaker, I have to go one film at a time, and any film that I work on, I have to feel like this might be the last one I get to do. So it had to be complete. We haven’t had one conversation about a Black Phone 3, and I don’t know that we will.
No other details have been revealed about Hawke and Derrickson’s new collaboration.
