Erotic Thriller ‘Deep Water’ Starring Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck, to Get Straight-to-VOD Release

The release of the Adrian Lyne-directed erotic thriller Deep Water, starring Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck and produced by New Regency and 20th Century Studios, the latter now a Disney property, had become a hot potato in the hands of the House of Mouse. Its story with a high sexual content didn’t seem to be in line with the type of productions that the company wanted to associate with its brand, be it in theaters or on its digital platform. So after it was learned that Lyne’s film had disappeared from Disney’s release schedule, everything pointed to it going directly to streaming, but it was unknown when and where.

And so it will be, although “when” is still to be announced. As Deadline reports, it will finally be on Hulu, also owned by The Walt Disney Company, and which hosts, let’s say more mature content, where Deep Water will arrive. But only in the United States, since the rights have been acquired internationally by Amazon Prime Video.

The truth is that the film, in which Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck also began a romantic relationship that would last almost a year, has another air of mystery since no image, poster or official trailer has yet been released. And this is despite the fact that it was initially due to hit theaters on November 13, 2020.

Deep Water ended up being another release postponed due to the pandemic, and the new date was set for January 14, 2022, which was finally removed from the Disney calendar.

Based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith, the film will have the appeal of its leading couple, but its story will, of course, be much thornier than the romance that Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck had in real life. Eroticism and mystery in which a married couple indulge in dangerous sexual games to try to save their relationship, while people begin to die around them.

And then there’s the added bonus of being the movie that brought director Adrian Lyne out of his nearly twenty-year retirement. The same man who put Michael Douglas’ character in serious trouble because of his extra-marital slip with Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction (1987), and that earned him his only Oscar nomination. An expert in the genre who also delighted us with the musical Flashdance (1983), 9 1/2 Weeks (1986), Indecent Proposal (1993) or his Lolita adaptation (1997). 2002’s Unfaithful, starring Richard Gere, Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez, has been his latest feature film release so far.
