Emma Watson Discusses Disillusionment, Directing, And Possible Return To Acting

Actress Emma Watson opens up about her difficulties with acting and publicity during an interview with the Financial Times. When asked about her five-year hiatus, she responds that she was feeling “a bit caged” by the profession.

Watson describes how she always felt isolated whenever she was put in front of the press to talk about a project that she feels that she had little to do with. To her, it was ”very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process.” She felt pressured to answer questions about how her own personal viewpoints lined up with whatever film she starred in, forced to answer for a role that she had little to no say in. It eventually reached a point where Watson wished that she could say, “in a way that didn’t make [her] hate [herself], ‘Yes, I screwed up, it was my decision, I should have done better.’”

Recently, she has been broadening her skills to work more in directing and producing. For instance, she worked on Prada advertisement for Prada Paradoxe Fragrance last winter, not only starring in it but also directing it. She recalls how she was always told she could direct her own work while on a film set, even during her time on Harry Potter. At first, she had some trepidations about it being more of a technical than a creative process. But, as she explains in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, she was excited to be given the chance to explore “a woman who’s a paradox,” relating to the concept based on her past experience of “always running against the current.”

Even so, when asked if she would return to acting, Watson responds with an eager but tentative “yes.” She expresses her desire to eventually find a role where she doesn’t have to feel like she is fracturing herself constantly. For now, “I’m happy to sit and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do.”
