Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl to Co-Star in Thriller ‘Colonia’

Principal photography has commenced on the political thriller Colonia, a dramatization of the 1973 Chilean coup d’état that eventually put dictator-to-be Augusto Pinochet into power. The film stars Emma Watson (Noah) and Daniel Bruhl (Rush) as Lena and Daniel, a young German couple taking part in demonstrations against the coup, leading to their arrest by Pinochet’s secret police.

Filming will take place in both Germany and South America, with Academy Award-winner Florian Gallenberger (the 2000 live-action short Quiero Ser) serving as both writer and director.

This feature will be another foray into more adult roles for the Harry Potter actress, Watson, along with her breakthrough performance in last year’s Biblical epic Noah and the upcoming drama Regression, in which she stars opposite Ethan Hawke (Training Day.) Watson’s Golden Globe-nominated costar Bruhl is also coming off several highly anticipated projects, including the Amanda Knox-inspired drama The Face of an Angelas well as now-untitled John Wells-directed movie starring Bradley Cooper (American Hustle.) Watson and Bruhl are the only actors that have been announced thus far for Colonia, which does not yet have a U.S. release date.
