Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
This week we celebrate the stunning diversity that movies can offer by visiting five disparate corners of the cinematic universe. The five trailers highlighted below represent not just different genres, but five unique approaches to filmmaking. From a big budget studio comedy to an ethereal tone poem of a film, with a few stops along the way, this roundup has a little bit of everything. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life.
#5 – The Houses October Built
With Halloween just over a month away, there has been an absolute glut of trailers for horror movies in recent weeks. While not much about this one looks exactly game-changing – and yes, it’s yet another found footage movie – it does appear to be well executed and explores a strange sub-culture (extreme haunted houses) that we haven’t really seen before.
#4 – The Better Angels
If you caught a strong whiff of Terrence Malick before checking the credits on this one, that’s because Malick protege A.J. Edwards is the director. Interestingly, just as Malick’s own Thin Red Line provided a welcome artistic and contemplative counterpoint to Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, this looks like it will do the same to last year’s stunningly on-the-nose Lincoln.
#3 – The Blue Room
Prefer your artistic pretensions with a foreign twist? French actor Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Grand Budapest Hotel) makes his feature directing debut here in a tale that looks like Hitchcock meets Last Tango in Paris.
#2 – The Interview (Red Band)
Years from now we may look back on this as the movie that started a real-life war with North Korea. More likely, we’ll simply remember it as yet another silly comedy that came and went. Whatever the outcome, this new red band trailer is a bawdy, enjoyable way to spend two and half minutes.
#1 – Big Hero 6
The much-anticipated debut collaboration between Disney Animation and Marvel Comics, this looks closer to Pixar quality storytelling than most recent Pixar movies.
