Elvis has passed the $150 million domestic box office mark, after being out for two months. The film is currently available both on PVOD and HBO Max, but is still making itself known at the box office. Baz Luhrumann’s biopic now sits on the list with Nope, Lightyear and Uncharted as 2022’s domestic highest grossing films.
Worldwide, the film has made over $280 million, with expectations of passing the $300 million mark when all is said and done.
Elvis is centered around Colonel Parker, who helped make Elvis Presley a star as well as showcases what America was like during that time. The film received high praise at the Cannes Film Festival and Austin Butler’s performance could snag him a nomination. However the film was met with some criticism, mainly over its 160-minute runtime alongside Luhrmann’s framing device.
This film comes at a crucial time for older audiences. Last year’s Steven Spielberg film, West Side Story and Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel bombed at the box office. However Scott’s House of Gucci made a comeback by making over $150 million worldwide, mainly because of Lady Gaga’s performance.
Elvis is the second biggest music biopic worldwide behind Bohemian Rhapsody. Luhrmann’s biggest film is still his 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio which grossed over $350 million worldwide.
Elvis is available for digital ownership and Video OnDemand rentals, and will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD on September 13.
