Elizabeth Olsen Talks ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

SPOILERS AHEAD PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK

Elizabeth Olsen sat down to discuss Scarlet Witch and all things the Multiverse following the recent release of Marvel’s newest film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When asked about Wanda’s large character shift to playing the antagonist in the film rather than a hero, Olsen explains that this was something she was told about near the wrapping of WandaVision. It was important to her to portray Wanda’s current state of being in a way that was honest and riddled with acceptance and that she wanted to show this in a way that was not “repetitive” for viewers.

She also talks about her character’s battle with the Illuminati, some characters that fans have been waiting a long time to come to the MCU. Olsen notes that the decision reached on Wanda’s power limitations in the Multiverse was that she was essentially in “a less oiled version of her body” and that using her body was like “using a bad car.” When Olsen first discovered she would be going up against these new characters, she thought it would be difficult.

With a laugh, Olsen even recalls that moment when Scarlet Witch breaks down the fourth wall. Apparently, it was something unscripted that director Sam Raimi had Olsen do a single time, simply suggesting that for this take, she just looked down the barrel of the camera, and it made it into the film.

Olsen reports she is unaware of any current future plans for Wanda and that she’s excited to find out where she’s going next, such as the upcoming X-Men films since Scarlet Witch was associated with the X-Men in the comics, but so far, no confirmation of any kind has been made.
