Fresh off her directorial smash hit Pitch Perfect 2, Elizabeth Banks is in talks to helm Universal’s adaptation of the YA novel Red Queen. It’ll be a major step up for Banks in terms of visual effects as well as budgets.
Red Queen tells the story of a young street urchin whose society is separated into two classes: red-blooded peasants and silver-blooded elites with special powers. Mare, the protagonist, was a lowly street thief until she is suddenly brought before the Silver Court after saving her best friend and displays her own magical power, something a red-blood shouldn’t even have. She is then caught up in the political intrigue of the two classes as a rebellion is planned. There is no casting news for the lead role or the other characters.
Producing the movie are Jake Weiner, Chris Bender, JC Spink, Pouya Shahbazian, and Christopher Cosmos. Pitch Perfect 2 broke records as the second-largest opening by a female director and to date has earned over $250 million worldwide.
Elizabeth Banks herself has been busy finishing up a few projects and starting new ones. She has roles in both Magic Mike XXL, coming in July, and in the final installment of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2 as Effie Trinket. She’s also been working on two television shows, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and Moonbeam City.
Red Queen is still in development and has no set release date.
