Edgar Wright Releases ‘The World’s End’ Trailer

Focus Features and director Edgar Wright have just debuted their first U.S. trailer for he upcoming sci-fi comedy hybrid The World’s End, and it showcases everything audiences have come to expect from the gentleman who brought us Shaun of the Dead.  Also released today is the theatrical poster seen here:

Edgar Wright himself appears in and opens the trailer, firmly establishing that this is indeed the third installment of the so-called Cornetto trilogy.  Since 2007’s release of Hot Fuzz, fans have been waiting for the Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Wright team to tackle the apocalyptic /alien genre.  Many were fooled and disappointed by 2011’s Paul, in which Wright did not take the helm as director.  After filming the critically-acclaimed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Wright makes it clear in the trailer that he has joined his Spaced team and is pulling all the stops.

Both the poster and trailer finally highlight some of the supporting cast, including Rosamund Pike (An Education), Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit)and Eddie Marsan ().  These players must join Pegg and Frost in battling their way though a town taken over by robots that spew blue, ink-like blood when cracked open.  While the trailer gives us our first glance at the enemy and offers some eye-popping visuals, the viewer is left with more questions than answers.  But considering how tight-lipped Wright and Pegg have been about the project, it should come as no surprise that the trailer does not offer much in terms of plot details.

The World’s End opens on July 19th in the UK, and August 23rd in the U.S.
