Eddie Murphy Returns in Trailer for Upcoming Netflix Feature ‘Dolemite Is My Name’

The new trailer for an upcoming film titled Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy has just been released by Netflix. This film is significant because it marks Murphy’s first film role since his performance as Henry Joseph Church in the 2016 film Mr. Church.

Dolemite tells the story of a real-life comedian and rapper named Rudy Ray Moore, played by Murphy, who proves his haters wrong when he adopts an alter ego by the name of Dolemite, soon to become a famous icon of the 1970s blaxploitation genre. As his character grows in popularity and raunchiness, Moore decides to make a film starring his alter ego. However, trouble ensues as behind the scene issuess complicate the film’s production, as hinted at in the trailer. Starring alongside Murphy include big names like Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Wesley Snipes, Chris Rock, and even a cameo appearance by Snoop Dogg to round out the all-star cast.

Dolemite was directed by Craig Brewer, whose previous work includes Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, and its script was written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Although Netflix has not announced a release date yet, it’s likely the film will begin streaming and receive a select theater release this fall, likely in time for Oscar Season.
