‘Dune’ Stays Atop The Box Office After Slow Halloween Weekend

Halloween 2021 is the first in-person celebration of the American trick-or-treat tradition in two years and has consequently gutted this past weekend’s box office earnings. Dune, however, has managed to stay afloat.

Statistics show that whenever a holiday falls on a Sunday it has dire consequences on that weekend’s box office numbers. This year’s Halloween was no exception as children went trick-or-treating and grown-ups got together to celebrate.

Though, Dune has come in first place during the spookiest season of the year with $15.5 million. The science-fiction epic continues to be number one in the USA despite Halloween parties and HBO-Max. The running domestic global is now at $69.4 million and is currently heading towards the $300 million benchmark worldwide.

Director Edgar Wright’s newest film Last Night in Soho tied with Guillermo del Toro’s latest production Antlers at $4.16 million on their opening weekend. A rather poor result for two movies whose unnerving stories could have profited from last weekend’s terrifying theme.

Funimation’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission had solid results this weekend. Sneaking into fourth place with $6.1 million in the box office, the third installment of the My Hero Academia franchise had a better opening weekend than its 2018 predecessor My Hero Academia: Two Heroes ($5.8million). And last but not least The French Dispatch had a good second weekend grossing a total of $2.75 million.

Even though it has been a slow Halloween weekend, the month of October has actually been the highest-grossing of the year. Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Dune, Halloween Kills, and No Time To Die have all had huge success this past month. This weekend might just have been the calm before the storm as we approach the Christmas season with even more blockbusters.
