Door From ‘Titanic’ Sold At Auction, Alongside Indiana Jones’ Whip And Other Movie Props

Many aspects of James Cameron’s Titanic have permeated pop culture, one of the most famous being the door used in the pivotal final act, which was recently sold at an auction. The prop was sold alongside other iconic movie props.

The auction for the props was held by Heritage Auctions, under their Treasures from Planet Hollywood category.

The door in question from Titanic is the item that saved Rose DeWitt Bukater’s life once the doomed RMS Titanic sank. Once the ship went down, Rose, played by Kate Winslet, was able to stay floating above the freezing waters thanks to the door, while her love interest, Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, had to stay in the water, for risk of sinking the door.

As The Hollywood Reporter points out, the debate about whether or not the door could hold Jack and Rose has been a hot one since the film sailed onto the big screen in 1997.

Director James Cameron has chimed in on the debate, saying that there were too many active variables at play to say for sure if Jack could have lived or not, “I think his [Jack’s] thought process was, I’m not going to do one thing that jeopardizes her. And that’s 100 percent in character,” Cameron added.

The door from the film sold for a grand total of $718,750 at the end of the bidding. A dress that Winslet donned in Titanic also sold during the auction for $125,000.

Alongside the door, some props from the Indiana Jones franchise sold. Indy’s iconic whip from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom sold for $525,000, along with the trio of  Sankara stones, the items Indy had to track down in the film, going for $100,000. The Holy Grail that Indy found in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade also sold for $87,500.

Keeping with the line of Spielberg films, the Barbasol shaving cream can used by Denis Nedry to attempt to smuggle dinosaur embryos off the island in Jurassic Park sold for $250,000.

Also selling was the black suit Tobey Maguire donned in Spider-Man 3, for $125,000, the axe used by Jack Torrance in The Shining, also for $125,000, and Bill Murray’s screen used bowling ball from Kingpin, going for $350,000.
