Disney’s Live Action ‘The Lion King’ Is Now the Company’s Highest Grossing Remake

Disney’s latest plan to remake their classic animated films in live action form, whether we like it or not, has seriously paid off. Although some people have criticized these movies for being unnecessary remakes of superior movies, audience seem to be supportive of these remakes financially. Because of this, Disney’s live-action remakes have been dominating the box office this year.

In fact, the recent remake of The Lion King has just made over billion dollars at the international Box Office, surpassing results of both Frozen and the original The Lion King. The 2019 film is now the most financially successful of all the Disney remakes and, according to Screen Rant, the highest grossing Disney movie of all time excluding any Star Wars or Marvel Cinematic Universe entry. It’s the second big record Disney set this year after Avenger’s: Endgame surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar– now owned by Disney via the Fox merger- to become the highest grossing movie of all time, a title it’s likely going to keep for the time being.

Before the release of this new The Lion King, many critics were skeptical about the movie’s financial prospects, but clearly they were proven wrong. The Lion King‘s success will probably encourage Disney to continue remaking their animated movies, but who knows what will happen once the company runs out of classics? Maybe they’ll go back to making ‘direct to video’ sequels.
