Many Marvel fans may recognize Joe Johnston as the director of Captain America: The First Avenger, but before Johnston brought Captain America to the big screen he had a very extensive film career. Johnston directed a number of famous movies with ground breaking special effects including Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the original Robin Williams Jumanji movie, and of course 1991’s The Rocketeer.
The Rocketeer is a period piece superhero film adapted from the comic book of the same name. Set in the 1930s, it follows the story of a stunt pilot named Cliff Secord who, after finding an experimental jet pack, becomes a crime fighter called the Rocketeer. Many movie fans view The Rocketeer as a prototype for Captain America: The First Avenger given the tonal similarities between the two movies.
When The Rocketeer was first released, Johnson had made plans to make sequels to the movie, but unfortunately they never materialized until now. According to MovieWeb, Disney announced that The Rocketeer 2 will be made and shown on the Disney+ streaming site. As of this time, no one is currently attached to direct this movie, but recently on Twitter, director JD Dillard (Sleight, Sweetheart) tweeted that he would love to direct a sequel to The Rocketeer.
Currently not much is known about this movie, but we do know that The Rocketeer 2 will be a direct sequel to the original film and take place during the Cold War. This time the plot will be about of a young black female pilot who must protect the precious jet pack technology from falling into the hands of the Russians.
While there are no further details at this time, at least we now know that The Rocketeer 2 is finally going to happen.
