Disney continues to add steam to the ship of one of their future productions, Captain Nemo. It has been the reported that James Mangold (Walk the Line, The Wolverine) will hop on board to direct the origin story based on the classic science fiction novel 20,000 League’s Under the Sea, according to Deadline.
David Fincher had developed the idea for the film with Seven writer, Andrew Kevin Walker, creating the first draft of the script. However, he decided to direct Gone Girl, leaving the project in the open for the studio. Sebastian Gutierrez (Gothika, Snakes on a Plane) has been working on the latest draft for the screenplay.
The “House of Mouse” had already adapted Jules Verne’s story once back in 1954, a movie which was nominated for three Oscars and won two. It was one of the earliest live-action pictures made by the studio highlighted by the scene which involved a giant squid. The premise for the latest installment will revolve around the titular character and the building of his legendary ship Nautilus.
Not connected to Disney’s upcoming film, Bryan Singer has stated that he will direct remake to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea made by Fox. Singer’s latest film X-Men: Apocalypse releases this year on May 27.
Before Mangold sets sail unto new waters, he is on board to helm the sequel to 2013’s The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman this year. It is expected to release March 3, 2017
