Given the state of the pandemic, going to the theater has been difficult with the critical markets of Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco still closed. Warner Bros’ domestic box office for Tenet is making only $6.7M in its second weekend going into its third week, which shows without Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, big blockbuster movies like Tenet will not be doing so well.
Recently, there have been movies that can make a lot of money being postponed, like Wonder Woman 1984 and Candyman. Now, it looks like Black Widow and Soul might be getting postponed as well. Exhibition sources tell Deadline that Disney is pondering a theatrical release date move for Black Widow off its Nov. 6 date. There hasn’t been any more information on where it is going or when it is coming.
Last week, there was talk about moving Soul to Disney+ instead of a theatrical release but a Disney insider today disputed claims of that happening. Soul is still scheduled to be released on Nov. 20 for now.
According to a recent NRG poll, 51% of moviegoers are comfortable or somewhat comfortable about returning to the theater during the pandemic. However, 49% are still uncomfortable, which leads to another hurdle for the film industry; only 41% of all potential moviegoers know that their local theater is open.
