Disney is in search for new Mary Poppins for their planned sequel and currently have discussed the role with British actress Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow). The studio has had endearing success portraying the magical nanny since the 1964 original, most recently in Saving Mr. Banks which starred Emma Thompson (Much Ado About Nothing) and Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies).
Rob Marshall (Chicago) has been selected to direct with John DeLuca and Marc Platt producing. Marshall and DeLuca have worked with Blunt in Disney’s Into the Woods, making her a a favorite to play P.L. Travers’ popular character.
The plot for the sequel is said to be adapted from Travers’ children’s books taking place 20 years after the first film. It will still be set in London and focus on the adventures of Poppins’ and the Banks family.
Blunt is currently expecting her second child which may be a reason the deal has not been completed yet. The studio is hoping to start production soon.
With Disney’s success in adapting their animated films into live-action, such as Cinderalla, Alice in Wonderland, and the upcoming The Jungle Book, it is without surprise that they are looking to remake and continue their slate of classic live-action films.
Blunt has had a diverse career starring in a multitude of movies with different genres. From comedic roles in the Devil Wears Prada and Five Year Engagement to action sci-fi’s in Edge of Tomorrow, she has displayed a wide range of acting. Blunt was recently seen in the crime drama Sicario and can be seen next in this year’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War and The Girl on the Train.
