Brad Pitt continues to find interesting and starkly relevant projects under his production company Plan B, and now he’s teaming up with the veteran writer Tony Kushner to adapt the memoir He Wanted the Moon, written by the daughter of the famous Dr. Perry Baird, Mimi, and co-writer Eve Claxton. The medical drama will be also produced by Cross Creek Pictures.
The full title of the book is He Wanted the Moon: The Madness and Medical Genius of Dr. Perry Baird, and His Daughter’s Quest to Know Him. It tells the story of a renowned doctor in the 20s and 30s who was discovering the beginnings of manic depression, but during that time the doctor also began to suffer from it himself. And after his work was published he had been in-and-out of institutions, received a lobotomy shortly after, and then died tragically from a seizure.
Looking back at some of his past work, Kushner is a smart choice for the project after having gained fame for his work with Steven Spielberg on Lincoln and Munich. Plan B has also already been involved in the Oscar season multiple times now having co-produced 12 Years Slave and The Big Short. So far no one has been cast but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Pitt decides to star in the lead role himself come production time.
The Big Short is currently playing in theaters, and Pitt can be seen next in the upcoming militant comedy film War Machine later this year.
