Two movie studios are in negotiations for the second time about merging – 21st Century Fox with Disney. The discussion comes after Disney announced plans to stop Netflix’ original programming next year by launching their own streaming media, according to Bloomberg. This is the second major merger of two mainstream media conglomerates (the first was when AT&T and Time Warner merged in 2016 to create Spectrum.)
If the merge goes through, Disney would take over most of 21st Century Fox’s movie and TV programming including the FX channel and National Geographic. Its broadcast channels are not part of the deal and billionaire Rupert Murdoch would still be in charge of those, so far.
Most notably, Disney would be acquiring Fox’s superhero and franchise properties, including the X-Men universe and all of James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels, both of which would likely be hits on the new streaming service.
The decision has not been made and other companies including Verizon and Comcast are also trying to buy out parts of Fox.
More on this to follow.
