Disney Announces Release Date for ‘The Finest Hours’

Based on the 2009 novel of the same title by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias, Disney’s The Finest Hours will be hitting theaters April 15, 2016.  Whitaker Entertainment began filming the period Coast Guard drama in Boston, Massachusetts in early September, with filming anticipated to run through December 2014.

In February of 1952, one of the worst storms ever to hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod, and literally ripped it in half.  On a small lifeboat, faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel.

The Finest Hours is the story of their heroic undertaking, which is still considered the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.

The feature stars Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), Ben Foster (Lone Survivor), Casey Affleck (Interstellar), and Eric Bana (Munich), while Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award winner, Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm), will direct from an adapted screenplay written by Academy Award nominees Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy (The Fighter), with revisions by Scott Silver (8 Mile).  Online Film & Television Association (OFTA) Award nominee, Dorothy Aufiero (Spartan) will produce along with Peabody Awards winner James Whitaker (The Odd Life of Timothy Green).  Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will handle domestic Distribution.
