Just as the Sundance hit Diary of Teenage Girl hits theaters this weekend, that films’ breakout star Bel Powley has been cast in another coming-of-age tale- Carrie Pilby– according to The Hollywood Reporter. She will be replacing Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 2) who exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. Powley will be joining Jason Ritter (TV’s Parenthood), Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton), and Saturday Night Live‘s Vanessa Bayer.
Powley will be portraying the titular character, an intellectual young woman struggling to reconcile the differing worlds of morality, sex, relationships, and socializing. The story is based off the young adult novel by Caren Lissner which has been adapted for the screen by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral) and Pride and Prejudice actress Kara Holden. Mean Creek producer Susan Johnson will be directing the film as her feature debut.
Powley is an English-born actress on the rise within the indie world. Besides Diary of a Teenage Girl in which she stars alongside Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Alexander Skarsgard (HBO’s True Blood), she will also appear in Equals with Kristen Stewart (Adventureland) and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) which will soon premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Her next projects include A Storm in the Stars with Elle Fanning (Maleficent) and Detour with young actor Tye Sheridan (Joe).
