Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, and Candice Bergen Starring in ‘Book Club’

It seems that Bill Holderman, most well-known for producing A Walk in the Woods with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, is moving into directing films of the same age bracket, but this time with female leads. According to report in Deadline, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Jane Fonda will star as three of the four lead characters (the fourth actress has yet to be cast) in Book Club. The indie comedy will be Holderman’s directorial debut. Holderman co-wrote the script with Erin Simms (who also worked on A Walk in the Woods) and both will also serve as producers on the film.

The story will revolve around four lifelong friends in their 60s (even though the lead actresses are in their 70s, but look 10 years younger!). The group of four, who normally read intellectual classics decide to read Fifty Shades of Grey in their monthly book club, and have their lives changed forever. The film is set both in and around California, and is currently in pre-production.

Bloom, Alex Walton’s production company, responsible for The Sea of Trees and The Nice Guys, will be handling international sales for Book Club at Cannes. Andrew Duncan and Alex Saks from June Pictures will produce.

Keaton can be seen next in Netflix’s Divanation alongside Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, as well as the romantic comedy Hampstead. Keaton is known for her role in the The Godfather series, as well as winning the Oscar for Best Actress in 1978 for Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.

Fonda can be seen next in Netflix’s Our Souls At Night, alongside Robert Redford. Otherwise, she can be seen alongside Lily Tomlin in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, which has been renewed for a fourth season. Fonda has won two Oscars for Best Actress: one in 1972 for Klute, and one in 1979 for Coming Home.

Bergen will be seen next alongside Michael Sheen and Reese Witherspoon in the romantic comedy Home Again. She can also be seen in Netflix’s The Meyerowitz Storiesalongside Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson, and Dustin Hoffman, which focuses on an estranged family that gathers in New York. She is most well-known to modern audiences for her role alongside Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality.
