‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Film Adaptation Sets September Theatrical Release Date

Universal’s upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen has set release date for September 24. The film will star Ben Platt, who is reprising his Tony-winning role, alongside Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore, who will play Evan’s mother. 

Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a high school senior with social anxiety disorder who undergoes a journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate. Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever will co-star in the film, as well as Colton Ryan, Danny Pino and Nik Dodani. 

Wonder and The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Steve Chbosky will direct Dear Evan Hansen with a screenplay from Steven Levenson, the writer of the book that the Broadway Musical was based on. Chbosky is also currently working on a live-action feature about Prince Charming titled, Prince Charming. 

Platt played a part in the first two Pitch Perfect films as Benji, and he’s made appearances in television shows like The Simpsons and Will & Grace. He’s also set to star in an upcoming musical comedy film from Boyhood director Richard Linklater, Merrily We Roll Along, and Camp X-Ray director Peter Settler’s upcoming drama Broken Diamonds.
