The Hollywood Reporter reports Warner Bros. has tapped the Wonder Twins to add to their live-action superhero projects. The studio hired Adam Sztykiel, who worked on the upcoming feature Black Adam with Dwayne Johnson, to write and direct the original live-action feature for HBO Max.
The Wonder Twins are a pair of alien siblings named Zan and Jayna. They were introduced to audiences on Hanna-Barbera’s television show The All-New Super Friends Hour in 1977 as companions to adult superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. They then appeared in the Super Friends comic and slowly incorporated into the larger DC universe.
The twins showed the campier side of DC comics and were often the butt of many jokes and made into memes. That’s not hard to believe when their catchphrase is “Wonder Twin power, activate!” which is said before Jayna turns into any animal and Zan turns into different forms of water.
In recent years DC has attempted to update the characters and scaled up their powers in shows like Teen Titans Go!, The Flash, and Smallville, where they made several guest appearances.
Sztykiel is an established screenwriter for major studios and has a long history with Warner Bros. comedies like Due Date, Project X, Spy Guys, We’re the Millers, and Warner Animation feature film Scoob!. He first started working with Johnson when he wrote the monster movie Rampage.
The project’s plot is being kept under wraps. Sztykiel’s next film, Black Adam, will hit theaters on July 29.
