Yesterday at Comic-Con San Diego, Oscar Winning director, Ryan Coogler (Sinners) confirmed that David Jonsson (The Long Walk) will be the next to take up the Black Panther mantle.

The news broke as a special announcement a during the Marvel panel. According to the press release, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige brought out Coogler to give the news. Coogler was joined on stage by Letitia Wright (Black Panther), who plays Shari, and Winston Duke (Black Panther), who plays M’Baku, when he broke news of the release date, which is December 15th, 2028. Jonsson joined the stage when Coogler gave the announcement that he will be the next Black Panther.

Before Jonsson, Chadwick Boseman portrayed the character in multiple films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), until his tragic passing to colon cancer on August 28th, 2020. In the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, he had an on screen death from an unknown disease and since the release of the sequel in 2022, Black Panther was never replaced, rather the mantle was passed onto Shuri canonically.

This will be the third film to be directed by Coogler in the series, previously writing and directed Black Panther and the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Stay tuned with us at MXDWN for updates on the film.
