David Fincher returned to the director’s seat for the first time in six years with his film Mank, and while one might expect the acclaimed filmmaker to continue staying out of the spotlight, it looks like he already has a few things lined up. His new slate of projects includes a series where he’ll talk with special guests about the films they love.
“I am playing with adapting a French graphic novel about an assassin,” said Fincher in an interview with Trial of the Chicago 7 director Aaron Sorkin on the Director’s Cut podcast. “I am playing with… Robert Towne and I are trying to break a limited series, sort of a prequel to ‘Chinatown.’ Jake Gittes’ time in Chinatown with Lou Escobar. And I’m working on a show about film appreciation and about movies that I love, with guests I love, about movies that they love.”
The French graphic novel project, titled The Killer, will see Fincher reteam with Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker and will star Michael Fassbender. The Chinatown prequel is being made for Netflix with co-writer Robert Towne, who also wrote the original film.
Fincher is known for his strict directing process and heavily stylized films, with many considering him to be one of the best living filmmakers. To see him at the steering wheel of a masterclass of sorts could make for a unique and fascinating series.
