David Cronenberg Marks His Return With Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie ‘Crimes of the Future’ Starring Viggo Mortensen

David Cronenberg is directing his first movie in seven years with his upcoming sci-fi film Crimes of the Future. This will be his first film since Maps to the Stars, which was released in 2014. The  new film will have star-studded cast, including Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar and Lihi Kornowski.

Crimes of the Future will begin shooting  in Greece on August 2nd, and it will last 30 days, until September 10th. The film will be shot mainly around the capital, Athens, including at the Iris cinema, Arcade of Anatolia, and harbor of Piraeus.

Actual plot details for Crimes of the Future are still under wraps, but according to Indiewire, the film, “…takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, ‘Accelerated Evolution Syndrome,’ is spreading fast. Saul Tenser is a beloved performance artist who has embraced Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body.”

Earlier this year, Viggo Mortensen, who is a frequent collaborator with Cronenberg, told GQ about the upcoming film, stating that Cronenberg will be returning to his body horror origins, “It’s something he wrote a long time ago, and he never got it made. Now he’s refined it, and he wants to shoot it. Hopefully, it’ll be this summer we’ll be filming. I would say, without giving the story away, he’s going maybe a little bit back to his origins”. Crimes of the Future is a Serendipity Point Films and Argonauts co-production and is being produced in association with Ingenious Media, Coficine, and Telefilm Canada, with the support of EKOME.

Melissa Cusano: I love to escape reality with reading, writing, movies, and music! If I'm not working I love to go to concerts (pre-covid), play video games, and hang out with my dog Ozzi.
