Matthew Libatique is one of the most in-demand cinematographers working today. Earlier this year, the 52-year-old’s work was on display in the Harley Quinn spinoff film Birds of Prey and Netflix’s Musical Comedy, The Prom. Now, due to recent interview with Rappler, we know that the Oscar-nominated cinematographer will reunite with Darren Aronofsky for his next project.
“I’m planning to make a small film with [Darren] Aronofsky that obviously I can’t talk about,” said Libatique. “But yeah, that’s the next thing for me.” The new project should start filming after he finishes his work on Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film, Don’t Worry Darling.
Libatique and Aronofsky met in film school and have since collaborated on some of the director’s most acclaimed films, including Requiem for Dream and Black Swan. Another film together would mark the seventh feature-length collaboration between the two filmmakers.
However, Libatique may not actually be able to shoot the project. Last month it was reported that the cinematographer is facing four years in Polish prison for allegedly assaulting a first responder at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival in 2018. Libatique is scheduled to stand trial in February, so it remains to be seen how the case may impact this new project with Aronofsky,
Aronofsky’s most recent project is the Lance Oppenheim-directed documentary, Some Kind of Heaven, which he produced. The doc takes a stylized dive into a massive self-contained retirement community village in Central Florida, and it’s set to release January 15, 2021.
