20th Century Fox is finally moving forward with its plans to remake the iconic musical Guys and Dolls by hiring scribe Danny Strong, who penned the Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, and the adaptation of Dan Brown’s sequel to The DaVinci Code – The Last Symbol.
Based on the Damon Runyon short stories of gamblers in the early 1920’s, the story was adapted into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. It was set to win a Pulitzer Prize for drama, but because Burrows was being questioned by the House on Un-American Activities, the Trustees At Columbia University vetoed the selection. It was made into a movie starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra in 1955. Mike Fleming of Deadline had previously reported that the studio was hoping to cast Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead roles, and claims that is still the case, although several other A-list actors such as Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe are said to be interested.
The story revolves around two gamblers, Nathan Detroit who is looking to set up a traveling crap game in New York City, and his pal Sky Masterson who has the money Nathan needs to get the game going. Nathan bets Sky that he isn’t man enough to get the prim head of the Salvation Army to go on a trip to Havana with him. Songs include such classics as ‘Luck Be A Lady Tonight‘ and ‘Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat’.
Sam Goldwyn Jr. and his son John Goldwyn, who just produced the Ben Stiller-directed remake of The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty will produce Guys and Dolls.
