Daniel Kaluuya, best known for his lead roles in Judas and The Black Messiah and Get Out, will have his screenwriting debut with The Kitchen for Netflix. Kaluuya and Joe Murtaugh co-wrote the script, with Kibwe Tavares directing and Michael Fassbender joining as executive producer.
The Kitchen is a dystopian drama set in 2044 London and is set to film on location in London and Paris. The film stars Kane Robinson of Top Boy, a Netflix series, as Izi, a resident of “the kitchen” desperately searching for a way out.
“London, 2044, a future where the gap between rich and poor has been stretched to its limits,” the logline says. “All forms of social housing have been eradicated, and London’s working classes have been forced to live in temporary accommodation on the outskirts of the city. The Kitchen is the first and largest of its kind, it’s London’s last village harbouring residents that refuse to move on and move out of the place they call home.”
The storyline follows Izi and 12-year-old orphan Benji, “our unlikely pair as they battle to survive in a system that is stacked against them,” the logline concludes.
“‘The Kitchen’ is very much a love letter to London, the city that has defined my childhood and ultimately my identity,” notes director Tavares. “It’s set in an extreme version of our current world; our characters have little choice but to let the city take over them.”
There is a set global release for the film on Netflix in 2023.
