According to Deadline, the 10 Cloverfield Lane director Daniel Trachtenberg is in talks to direct Lionsgate’s Harry Houdini film. Before, there were plans of Johnny Depp to star with Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) directing. But now, there is evidence that Trachtenberg will take on the project.
The film will be based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman’s book, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. It is said to be echoing the other magical movie The Prestige (2006), directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as competing stage illusionists. The project’s scrip will be written by Noah Oppenheim. He won the scripting prize in Venice earlier this fall. He will depict Houdini not just as a master magician, but as an adventurer and investigator of the occult.
10 Cloverfield Lane, produced by J.J. Abrams, was a bit of a Houdini act in itself when it premiered this year almost out of nowhere as a follow up to 2008’s Cloverfield. It will be exciting to see of Trachtenberg can bring a similar shock and awe to this new film.
