Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the hit musical Hamilton, has just been given a shot at directing a movie for Netflix. He will specifically be directing a film adaptation of the musical Tick, Tick…Boom! According to Variety, Netflix earned the film rights to the musical after winning an intense bidding war.
Tick, Tick…Boom! was originally a solo show written by the late Jonathan Larson, who is best known for creating the musical Rent. The plot of Tick, Tick…Boom! is autobiographical to Larson’s life as a struggling composer living in New York during the 1990’s. In the show the protagonist, who is of course a struggling composer named Jon, is forced to wait tables in order to survive. Over the course of the story, Jon must wrestle with his anxiety of turning 30, his jealousy of his more successful best friend, and his fear of getting married to his girlfriend. After Larson died, writer David Auburn adapted the solo show into a musical. The Netflix movie will be an adaptation of the musical, rather than the solo show.
Lin-Manuel Miranda has been chosen to direct the movie, and Stephen Levenson, who wrote Dear Evan Hansen, will be penning the script. Currently the studio is considering Andrew Garfield for the lead role of Jon. This will be Miranda’s directorial debut, even though he previously performed in stage version of Tick, Tick…Boom! back in 2014.
