The bangs are back! Courteney Cox is set to reprise her role as the news reporter that we love to hate, Gale Weathers, for Spyglass Media Group’s and Paramount Pictures’s upcoming ‘relaunch’ of the beloved Scream franchise
Cox joins the previously announced David Arquette in the newest attempt to restart the classic horror franchise that has generated four movies and over $600 million dollars worldwide.
Production on the new Scream movie, which has been confirmed as a semi-reboot of the franchise, will shoot in Wilmington, North Carolina. Additional casting is still underway, so movie lovers everywhere can wait with anxious excitement to see who else joins the cast.
The new film is still set to be helmed by Ready or Not filmmakers Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Franchise creator/ writer Kevin Williamson will serve as executive producer.
The beloved franchise has been dormant on the big screen since 2011’s Scream 4, with the franchise continuing on television for 3 seasons. With the franchise being known for making fun of horror cliches as well as poking fun on the nature of sequels in the original installments, there are an abundant of different directions the creative team can take with it. With the news of Cox and Arquette returning, this is already not the typical Hollywood reboot. Whether the film will live up to the legacy of the original movies is to be seen, but it certainly is shaping up to be promising.
