Good news, comics fans: the theatrical release of Venom 2 is still set for October 2nd, 2020.
Even though many of Sony’s productions (Morbius, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Peter Rabbit 2) have been delayed by the outbreak of COVID-19, it seems that the sequel for 2018’s Venom is going ahead with its release on schedule. Or, at the very least, Sony has not yet announced its postponement. The film’s star, Tom Hardy, confirmed in early February that filming in London had finished.
Venom 2 sees the return of Hardy as main protagonist Eddie Brock, a reporter whose body serves as host to the alien symbiote Venom. Also featuring is long awaited comic villain Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson, as was teased in the end-credits scene of the first Venom. Michelle Williams returns as Anne Weying, Brock’s ex-girlfriend. Naomie Harris and Stephen Graham are also set to feature in the film as well. Andy Serkis, most famously known for portraying Gollum in both The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogy, is taking the director’s seat.
With many movie theaters shutting their doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, the success of Venom 2‘s release rests on whether or not theaters will be back in operation by October – and if moviegoers are willing to make the journey. There has been no word of a digital release of the movie at this time.
