Deadline has reported that Colin Jost and Pete Davidson are teaming up on the big screen for Worst Man, directed by stand-up comedy director and producer Christopher Storer. The film follows wedding and the inevitable hijinks that occur weeks prior to the wedding. With a name like Worst Man, it can be assumed that, if played with type, Davidson will play Jost’s best man, though either of the actors and writers playing against type is always a welcomed surprise. Universal Studios is distributing the film, while SNL creator Lorne Michaels is on as producer.
Storer has directed many stand-up specials in the last decade including Hasan Minhaj’s Homecoming King, Jeff Garlin’s Our Man in Chicago, and Bo Burnham’s Make Happy. He also produced Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade. The director has been quite successful with those specials, so it will not be surprising if his first feature outing is just as popular.
Jost recently married Scarlett Johansson, and seeing as Jost pitched this himself alongside Matthew Bass and Theodore Bressman, inspiration is clearly drawn from his recent engagement and subsequent marriage. Jost has been on SNL as a writer since 2005, and became head writer in 2012, eventually leaving that position and coming back in 2017. As he looks to the next part of his career, movies or a television show written and starring himself seem to be on the horizon.
Davidson was one of the youngest cast members ever on SNL at the age of 20, without a substantial background in the industry to that point it is quite impressive. Davidson has slowly made the dive into the mainstream as he’s starred in films like Big Time Adolescence and The King of Staten Island. The next few years he will star in The Suicide Squad and the war-drama The Things They Carried.
Jost and Davidson’s relationship goes back farther than SNL. While they’re both incredibly different and equally talented comedians, both came from the same hometown of Staten Island. This project is a huge step in both of their careers and it is heartwarming to see them still working together.
