Disney is in talks with actor Chris Pine and director Craig Gillespie regarding a planned coast guard drama The Finest Hours, says The Hollywood Reporter. The film is inspired by the true story of the crews of two oil tankers caught in storm and the efforts by the coast guard to rescue them. Gillespie previously directed Million Dollar Arm, which was also based on actual events.Disney hopes to cast Pine in a leading role but has not specified if that means a member of the coast guard or one of the crew on the tankers. The film will be produced by Jim Whitaker and written by Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson based on the book by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias.
Fans of seeing the coast guard represented in popular culture may remember the 2006 film The Guardian starring Kevin Costner as an experience coast guard rescuer and Ashton Kutcher as a promising candidate. While that film was a financial success, it was heavily criticized for its reliance on formula and cliche. Gillespie comes from a rather unusual body of work that includes the 2011 remake of Fright Night and also plans to direct the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and Zombies. Hopefully his unusual taste in material will help The Finest Hours avoid the pitfalls of The Guardian.
