Clint Eastwood’s newest film Cry Macho will see its international and domestic release on October 22nd this year. As part of Warner Bros.’s day-and-date premiere plan, which means a film will release simultaneously on more than one platform, Cry Macho will play in theaters and on HBO Max this fall. Warner Bros. made the decision to release its 2021 feature slate (a total of 17 films) in the day-and-date premiere format in early December 2020.
Cry Macho, directed by and starring Eastwood, is based on Richard Nash’s 1975 novel of the same title. It tells the story of a washed-up rodeo star from Texas named Miko who’s commissioned by a former boss to kidnap his son in Mexico and bring him back to the U.S.
Along the way, Miko is haunted by his past failures and trauma and deals with the challenge of safely getting back across the border. Nash’s novel was originally written as a screenplay, but he turned it into a novel when no one else would adapt it. Sadly, the author passed away in 2000 before he could see his passion project realized.
The films will play for one month on HBO Max, which is only available in the U.S., and release in theaters internationally. Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich says that the company put a lot of thought into this plan and consulted with epidemiologists prior to making the decision. He also says, “This hybrid exhibition model enables us to best support our films, creative partners and moviegoing in general throughout 2021.”
WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff comments on the matter, “unprecedented times…call for creative solutions,” as the day-and-date release format is a strictly pandemic-only strategy for the company.

Warner Bros. films to already see their day-and-date release include: Judas and the Black Messiah, Little Things, and Tom & Jerry.
