Lebanese actor and filmmaker Nadine Labaki has been enlisted by Netflix to direct its upcoming feature The Invisibles. Labaki is well-known for her films Caramel (2007), Where Do We Go Now? (2011), and the Oscar-nominated Capernaum (2018). The feature made her the first Arab female filmmaker to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film. She is also cast as performer in the upcoming Perfect Strangers, an Arabic remake of the Italian comedy of the same title.
Netflix’s The Invisibles is an English adaptation of the 2018 French film of the same name Les Invisibles directed by Louis-Julien Petit. The original version is based on the novel Sur la route des invisibles: Femmes dans la rue by Claire Lajeunie and published in 2015.
It tells the story of a group of social workers who find out that the women’s shelter they work for will be closing down in three months. They must scramble to get the women they care for into safer and stabler circumstances by that time…and at any cost.
Labaki is listed as producer on the film, along with Blueprint’s Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin. Diarmuid McKeown and Ben Knight will executive produce for Blueprint, as will Apollo Films, Atwater Capital, Charades, and Elemiah.
