Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Revealed: Next Film Is ‘Mythic Action Epic’ Shot With New Imax Technology

Details of legendary director Christopher Nolan’s star-studded next project at Universal have been revealed. According to an X post from Universal Pictures, the filmmaker’s next project “is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

Every time we think enough stars have been announced for this film, another one gets added to the cast. Most recently, Charlize Theron was added to the cast. She will star alongside other stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson. The Odyssey is Universal Studios and Nolan’s follow up to the Oscar-winning drama Oppenheimer. The film is projecting a production start date for the first half of 2025. Nolan is set to write and will produce with his wife Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.

Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem The Odyssey is one of the oldest pieces of literature in history and is deemed one of the greatest pieces of literature ever. It tells the story of the Greek hero Odysseus during his journey home after the end of the Trojan War.

Nolan’s film is not the first time The Odyssey has been brought to life. The first time was a 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, and later with 1954’s Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas. The satirical comedy film O Brother, Where Art Thou? from 2000 is loosely based on Homer’s poem, and 2024’s The Return with Ralph Fiennes is adapted from the last sections of the poem.

Recently on The Dish podcast, Holland admitted that he signed onto the project without knowing too many details. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about,” he said. “I’m super excited, but it’s been pretty quiet about the project. I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. He kind of loosely pitched what it is, and I’m sure when he’s ready he’ll announce what it’s about”.
