On Thursday, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt went to Jimmy Kimmel Live! And talked about his career and experience with Marvel. Surprisingly, he shared that before being cast as Star-lord, he got disappointed about ever being in a Marvel film after auditioning several times.

Pratt shared that he failed to get Marvel roles repeatedly and, at a certain point, vowed never to audition for them again. He said:

“I auditioned for Thor, but not even to be Thor – but to be one of the sidekick guys, and I didn’t get a callback. Usually they give you a little bit of feedback, and I remember the casting director goes, ‘Wow. You really made a big choice there.’ Which is code for like, ‘Hey, dial back the acting there, guy.’”

“It got to the point where I was never gonna audition for Marvel again.I was like, ‘This is stupid, I’m never gonna be in a Marvel movie.’”

The actor revealed that he auditioned almost for every Marvel film:

“I mean, all of them. Anything that came out that needed a guy that even remotely looked like me, I auditioned for in some way or another. And I would either submit a tape and they would say ‘No, we don’t need to see him,’ or I would get there and see them, they’d go, ‘No, that’s the last time we need to see you.”

For the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, James Gunn (who directed the trilogy) decided to see the actor again after his audition. The audition did not go perfectly, but Gunn chose to work with Pratt and perfect some rough edges. Then Pratt finally landed a Marvel role as Star-lord. The actor has worked in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and other Marvel features, such as the last Avengers films.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be available in theaters this upcoming week.
