Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot (Furious 7) will be at least partly set in World War I. Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), who plays the love interest of the Amazonian princess/superhero, confirmed the setting to the Toronto Sun.
The actor said, “It’s a period we don’t see often; it’s usually World War II. Our costume design is incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I’d never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here.”
The movie will explore the DC Comics character’s origins and home, including her first encounter with American airman Captain Steve Trevor (Pine), who crash-lands on Paradise Island and meets Princess Diana, aka Wonder Woman. Pine describes his character as “a rogue-ish, cynical realist who’s seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization. He’s a worldly guy, a charming guy, and it’s going to be a great, fun film. There are some incredibly deep, interesting and morally relevant themes.”
Rumors have swirled that Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on the 1970s TV show, might appear on the new film. Pine neither confirmed nor denied the rumor in a separate interview with E!. He teased, “If I could tell you that I wouldn’t, but I can’t.”
Pine will be seen this summer in his recurring role of Captain James T. Kirk in Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond directed by Justin Lin; the film opens July 22nd. He is currently promoting his just-completed film, The Finest Hours, which is scheduled to hit theaters on January 29th. The action drama directed by Craig Gillespie centers on a daring rescue by the Coast Guard off the coast of Cape Cod during a blizzard in 1952.
Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 23, 2017.
