‘Child’s Play’ Reboot Modernizes the Classic Horror Franchise

Orion Pictures released the first trailer for the upcoming Child’s Play reboot. While the trailer contains plenty of references to the original from 1988, the preview also gives audiences a taste of the changes to come. Kaslan has brought their Buddi dolls into the 21st century with innovations in modern interactive technology. The trailer indicates Chucky has tossed aside his old campy charisma for a preference to use pure brutality in his malevolent attacks. The film replaces the dark humor of the originals for something strictly terrifying.

The trailer begins as a wholesome advertisement for Kaslan’s new doll before transitioning to the heinous crimes committed by the infamous toy serial killer. The ad features Aubrey Plaza gifting a new Buddi doll to her son. Once opened, Chucky unleashes his sinister intentions to torture his host family. The possessed Buddi doll flashes a blinding red light – possibly scanning Chucky’s ignorant owner, Andy Barclay (Gabriel Bateman). The preview displays increasingly grotesque imagery before revealing Aubrey Plaza beaten and tied up in a warehouse. The last scene cuts to the possessed doll looking directly at the camera, completely veiled in shadow.

Child’s Play is written by Tyler Burton Smith and directed by Lars Klevberg. The horror reboot is set to release in domestic theaters on June 21, 2019. Watch the official Child’s Play trailer below.
